The Pilgrimage of Cristo de la Salud in El Palmar

Devotion and tradition on the waters of La Albufera

Every August, El Palmar—a small Valencian hamlet nestled in the heart of La Albufera Natural Park—becomes the setting for one of the most unique and moving festivals in the Valencian Community: the Romería del Cristo de la Salud. This aquatic procession, unique in its style, combines faith, cultural identity and a connection with the natural environment surrounding the village.

An event engraved in the soul of the people

The pilgrimage is held every 4th of August, the date that marks the beginning of the celebrations in honour of the Holy Christ of Health. On that day, at sunset, the image of Christ is carried from the Church of the Child Jesus of the Garden to the pier, accompanied by residents, cultural associations, falleras, musicians and authorities. Once there, Christ is placed on one of the traditional boats of La Albufera to begin a journey steeped in symbolism.

The water procession: faith among boats

During the procession, the parish priest blesses the waters from the boat carrying Christ, in the well-known lluet del llac, the most open area of the lake. Dozens of boats gather around him: some are official, such as the five provided by Valencia City Council —two for the Falleras Mayores, one for the media and others for community use— and others are private, coming from riverside towns such as Silla, Catarroja, Pinedo and El Saler.

All the boats stop their engines in the middle of the lake. The Gospel is proclaimed, hymns of praise to Christ are sung, and prayers for health and protection are offered. The moment, charged with solemnity, merges the natural landscape with the collective emotion of the participants.

Night-time procession through the streets of El Palmar

Although the aquatic pilgrimage is the most emblematic event, 6 August is the big day for Cristo de la Salud, coinciding with the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. On that day, El Palmar dresses up to welcome a night-time procession through its streets, in an atmosphere of fervour, music and petals. The waitresses of Christ, responsible for guarding and embellishing his image, throw flowers into the air while the hymn is played and, in some editions, a mascletà (firecracker display) next to the canal closes the day.

Deep roots and evolution of the pilgrimage

Devotion to Cristo de la Salud is closely linked to the history of El Palmar. Although the town’s first patron saints were the Virgin of Buena Guía and later Mare de Déu dels Àngels, it was after the cholera epidemics of the 19th century that veneration of Christ as a symbol of protection and health became established. It is said that during the pandemic of 1885, El Palmar suffered hardly any losses, which further reinforced this devotion.

The pilgrimage around the lake, as celebrated today, originated in 1974, inspired by a previous procession featuring the pilgrim image of the Virgin of the Forsaken. Since then, the event has established itself as one of the most beautiful and unique religious events on the Valencian calendar, with official recognition as a Festival of Provincial Tourist Interest.

El Palmar and La Albufera: a unique setting

Holding a procession on the water is only possible in a setting as special as La Albufera. This protected ecosystem and symbol of Valencian identity is much more than just a backdrop: it is part of the soul of the festival. The pilgrimage reinforces the bond between the people and the lake, between spirituality and nature.

El Palmar itself, surrounded by rice fields and known for its fishing and gastronomic traditions, is experiencing a particularly intense atmosphere these days. Restaurants such as Cañas y Barro, L’illa and Arroceria Maribel are filled with diners after the pilgrimage, offering the chance to end the day with an authentic paella or a traditional all i pebre, surrounded by the festive and family atmosphere that defines the town.

An experience that goes beyond religion

The Romería del Cristo de la Salud pilgrimage is not only a display of faith, but also a collective celebration of identity and belonging. Participating in it, whether on land or on the waters of the lake, means letting yourself be carried away by a shared emotion that unites generations and peoples, in a unique natural setting with a history that lives on year after year.
