A history linked to the Mediterranean and the Albufera
The lateen sail is one of the oldest navigation systems in the Mediterranean. It was already in use in Roman times and became very popular during the Arab domination. In the Albufera of Valencia, it was adapted in a special way: flat-bottomed boats, known as albuferenques, sailed with this triangular sail, which allowed them to take advantage of even weak winds and move in shallow waters.
For centuries, it was the usual means of transport for fishermen and farmers, as it allowed them to carry rice, firewood or fishing gear across the lake. Over time, engines replaced sails, but traditional boats never completely disappeared.

Wie die Boote sind
The traditional boats of the Albufera have a very distinctive design. They are long and narrow, with a shallow draught, which allows them to move even when the water level is low. Their most striking feature is their triangular sail, mounted on a long mast that can be adjusted according to the direction of the wind. These boats are steered with a paddle rudder and, in very shallow areas, also with the help of a pole called a perxa. Their silhouette, with their white sails unfurled on the lake, is one of the most iconic images of the Valencian landscape.
Associations that uphold tradition
Today, lateen sailing is recognised as intangible cultural heritage, and thanks to the efforts of local associations, it is kept alive. Groups such as the Associació de Vela Llatina de Silla, El Palmar, Catarroja, Sollana and the Federació Cultural Valenciana de Vela Llatina restore historic boats, organise gatherings and pass on sailing techniques to new generations.
Each exhibition is a mixture of sport, culture and popular celebration: dozens of boats with their sails unfurled cross the lake, recalling how people used to sail on the Albufera more than a century ago.
Lateen Sailing exhibitions remaining in 2025
If you want to enjoy this unique show, there are still two dates left this year:
- 20 September 2025 – Segle XXI Association of Valencia (12:00 noon).
A day in which different boats will sail across the lake, showcasing the sailors’ skill in steering the sails and harnessing the September winds.
- 4 October 2025 – Valencian Cultural Federation of Lateen Sailing.
End of season with a grand exhibition involving several associations from the region. It is the ideal opportunity to see the Albufera in the middle of autumn, with golden light on the water and white sails standing out against the landscape.

A cultural and scenic experience
Latina sail exhibitions are not just a sporting event: they are an opportunity to experience the history, culture and landscape of the Albufera. The image of dozens of white sails reflecting on the water is difficult to forget, and connects us with the agricultural and fishing tradition that has shaped this natural environment.
